I frequently hear questions from men about leading their families in devotions. I have written about that here.
However, oftentimes folks will ask about the younger children and how to teach and train them. I have all of our children together (ages range from 3-12) when we read and pray together. This has been a blessing for me as it challenges me to labor to communicate truth to my 3 & 5 year old girls as well as my 8 & 12 sons (not to mention my awesome wife.
At the same time I have been on the look out for a tool that would help me with my little girls. I believe I have found it in The Big Picture Story Bible.
This book is wonderfully illustrated and carefully written. Unlike so many other books geared for kids and modern evangelicals (sometimes the distinction is blurry here) the authors seem to labor for biblical precision; emphasizing a big God and the ugliness of sin. For instance, there is a repeated emphasis upon God’s sovereign rule, both in his character and his word; humanity’s sinful rebellion against God’s rule; and the prevailing faithfulness of God to his promises. In addition, the author, David Helm, regularly asks questions in the course of the book, proving to be helpful fodder for discussion and interaction with your child.
My kids are eager to bring the book to me to read and this gives me great joy as a parent. I am excited to heartily recommend The Big Picture Story Bible as published by Crossway.
I checked Westminster Books this morning and they are offering the book for $11.49 (50% off). This is cheaper than a pizza and will doubtless bring you more joy as you watch your kids listen and learn the story line of the Bible.
Update:: For some reason the book is no longer available on Westminster. You may pick one up either at Crossway or on Amazon. Sorry for any inconvenience.
