“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place… All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:1-4). “Don’t get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Eph.5:18).

Heavenly Father, on the church calendar it’s Pentecost Sunday—a day for celebrating the person and work of the Holy Spirit. His works are multiple, glorious and ever-needed.

By your Spirit—you revealed our need for Jesus and gave us a new heart and faith to trust him as our Savior. With your Spirit—you sealed us and made us your beloved children. We’ll never be unborn-again, disowned, or orphaned from you. Hallelujah! Through the Spirit—you constantly declare us to be your cherished children—guiltless, condemnation free, and loved. Turn the volume, way up, Father.

In the Spirit—you call us to walk. For the Spirit is the firstfruits of our final redemption—the guarantee that one Day we will be like Jesus and enjoy life forever in the new heaven and new earth. He is the engagement ring wrapped around our hearts—the sign and security of our marriage to Jesus.

And, Oh my, there’s more. The Spirit ceaselessly prays inside of us what we’d pray for ourselves if we knew what he knows. He gifts us for service, empowers us for mission, and restores our first love for Jesus. The Spirit grows the only imperishable fruit inside us—for our freedom and the blessing of those around us (Gal.5:22-23). Hallelujah to ALL of this, Father.

Individually and together we sing, “Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me (and us). Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me. Spirit of the Living God, Fall afresh on me.” So Very Amen.
